The Maine Artist Fellowship

When I was awarded a Maine Artist Fellowship from the Maine Arts Commission, I was working on a coastal sound series, recording both in Maine and in the Arctic.  But because of the pandemic, I focused on recording closer to home-- up and down the long peninsulas on the coast of Maine.

The Coastal Maine Recordings

After years of listening to and recording navigational bell buoys from the shore, I had the idea to record them—from out on the water.  Then, I had to find someone to boat me out.

While searching for bell buoys in Casco Bay, I discovered that there are three kinds of sounding buoys: the bell buoy, the gong buoy and the whistle buoy.  Each buoy creates sound by the motion of the water and the wind.
